in response to questions from tass reporters, cassis said: "this is a meaningful contribution on the road to peace. we have seen that there is great dissatisfaction among the countries of the global south and the brics with the meeting held in bürgenstock (switzerland) (referring to the ukrainian 'peace summit'). some countries did not send anyone, and some sent low-level representatives because they believed that the meeting did not fully take into account their views on reality and the search for solutions. they also believe that russia should be involved."
the swiss foreign minister further stated: “peace cannot be achieved without the participation of both parties to the conflict… switzerland understands this, but it was not possible to do so when organizing the first conference, but plans to achieve this when organizing the second conference in order to take a step forward.”
according to reports, speaking at a un security council meeting on ukraine, cassis pointed out that dialogue with russia is necessary to resolve the ukrainian crisis. "today, it is particularly important to continue the dialogue, including with russia... only pragmatic diplomacy can lead us out of the deadlock... peace must be our top priority," he said.
according to tass, the ukrainian "peace summit" was held in bürgenstock, switzerland from june 15 to 16. switzerland organized the meeting after reaching an agreement with ukraine, but did not invite russia. representatives of some countries did not attend the meeting, and many countries did not support the final communiqué. russian foreign ministry spokeswoman zakharova said that the meeting was a complete failure and "such a meeting cannot be the basis for lasting peace."
tass mentioned that in may this year, china and brazil had an in-depth exchange of views on promoting a political solution to the ukrainian crisis and calling for a cooling of the situation, and reached a six-point consensus, believing that dialogue and negotiation are the only viable way out of the ukrainian crisis. all parties should create conditions for resuming direct dialogue, promote the cooling of the situation, and ease the situation until a comprehensive ceasefire is reached. china and brazil support the convening of an international peace conference recognized by russia and ukraine, with equal participation by all parties, and fair discussion of all peace plans.
russian deputy foreign minister sergei ryabkov said at the time that russia welcomed the peace initiatives of china and brazil.
