on september 25, 2024, local time, wang yi, member of the political bureau of the cpc central committee and foreign minister, attended the g20 foreign ministers' meeting during the un general assembly in new york. the meeting was chaired by brazilian foreign minister vieira, and attended by brazilian president lula, south african president ramaphosa, representatives of g20 members and guest countries, un secretary-general guterres, and president of the 79th un general assembly filemon.
wang yi said that the theme of this year's g20 summit is "building a just world and a sustainable planet", which responds to the call of the times and meets the wishes of the people. g20 members should assume the responsibilities of major countries, demonstrate their responsibility, set an example for major countries, and promote and improve global governance in a spirit of partnership. the meeting launched an action initiative for global governance reform. the next step is to turn the initiative into action and the vision into results.
wang yi proposed that the g20 should be a supporter of un reform. adhere to true multilateralism and do not engage in selective multilateralism. as the core platform for global governance, the united nations should better fulfill its responsibilities and missions of maintaining world peace and promoting common development. the reform of the security council should be discussed in depth on the principle of consensus, with a view to increasing the representation of developing countries. the united nations should play a central role in the governance of artificial intelligence, a cutting-edge technology. china supports the establishment of an artificial intelligence governance mechanism under the united nations framework.
the g20 should be a promoter of global economic and financial governance reform. we should strengthen macroeconomic policy coordination and reduce the negative spillover effects of policy adjustments in developed economies. we should implement the global digital compact to bridge the north-south "digital divide". we should promote the reform of the international financial architecture and give developing countries more representation and voice. china supports secretary-general guterres' efforts to promote reform of the global financial system.
the g20 should be a promoter of global trade governance reform. we should stick to the original intention of building an open world economy, promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, create a fair, equitable and non-discriminatory trade and investment environment, oppose all forms of protectionism, and oppose discriminatory and exclusive arrangements, so that there will be more bridges for cooperation and fewer trade barriers like small courtyards and high walls.
the g20 should be a practitioner of reform in the field of global development. we should accelerate the implementation of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development and promote more inclusive, more equitable and more resilient development. we should deepen the global development partnership and promote the synergy and efficiency of global development actions. in the three years since president xi jinping put forward the global development initiative, it has been supported by more than 100 countries and international organizations, and more than 1,100 cooperation projects have been carried out with all parties. china is willing to continue to strengthen cooperation with g20 partners.
wang yi pointed out that peace and security are the common expectations of people of all countries, and turning swords into plowshares is the common goal of un member states. china advocates that the ukrainian crisis should be cooled down as soon as possible in accordance with the principle of "no spillover of the battlefield, no escalation of the war, and no fanning of the flames" to create conditions for launching peace talks at an appropriate time. the situation in gaza is a test of human justice and conscience. the top priority is to immediately achieve a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire, alleviate the humanitarian crisis, implement the "two-state solution", and accept palestine as a full member of the united nations. china is willing to promote the spirit of partnership with the g20, follow the purposes and principles of the un charter, advocate the construction of an equal and orderly world multipolarization, and inclusive economic globalization, share the fruits of development with the people of all countries, and build a better future together!
