september 25th, local time,ricarda lang and omid nooripour, co-chairs of the green party, one of germany's ruling coalition parties, have announced their resignations.the decision comes after the party suffered a series of recent defeats in parliamentary elections in three federal states in eastern germany.
in the brandenburg state parliamentary election on september 22, the green party failed to break the 5% threshold and therefore no longer has representation in the brandenburg state parliament. in early september, the green party also failed to pass the 5% threshold in thuringia; in saxony, the party barely returned to the state parliament. nuripur said, "the election results prove that our party is facing the most serious crisis in a decade."
ricarda lang and omid nuripour were elected as co-chairs at the end of january 2022. the current green party federal executive committee was elected for a two-year term in november 2023. according to lang, the committee will continue to perform its duties until new elections are held at the party congress in november.
