fast technology reported on september 25th,winamp, the classic music player from the 2000s, has finally opened up its source code for windows.
winamp's source code is hosted on github and uses the winamp collaborative license (wcl) version 1.0 agreement.
according to the agreement, developers can improve functionality and update the player ui to meet the needs of current users, but may not fork, modify or maintain forked versions based on the source code.
however, the source code has been published on github, and in theory there is no way to prevent the community from forking and modifying it, so this strategy is most likely winamp's way of avoiding copyright and legal issues that may arise in the future.
winamp is a digital media player developed by nullsoft in 1997. it is widely popular for its high simplicity, extremely low resource usage and user-friendly operation. it had 25 million registered users in the 2000s.
in may of this year, winamp officials announced that they would focus on new mobile players and other platforms, but did not want to abandon the tens of millions of users who used the software on windows, so they decided to open source it.
