jiang peng, deputy director of the national astronomical observatory of the chinese academy of sciences and director of the fast operation and development center, said that compared with the 500-meter aperture spherical telescope, the construction of a 40-meter aperture radio telescope is not difficult in itself, but to achieve the effect of network observation with the large-aperture fast, it faces two key technical difficulties. the first is a high-performance room-temperature receiver, which the team has never had before; the second is the data processing technology of comprehensive aperture, especially the data processing technology of telescopes with different apertures, for which there is no particularly mature experience in china at present, and both require technical breakthroughs.

zhu weiwei, a researcher at the national astronomical observatory of the chinese academy of sciences and the chief scientist of the fast operation and development center, said that compared with the 100-meter radio telescope in operation, fast's sensitivity is one order of magnitude higher, but its resolution is much lower than that of the world's top array telescopes. the resolution is related to the size of the aperture. adding some auxiliary telescopes around fast is equivalent to turning it into a telescope with a large aperture, but only some small places in this large-aperture telescope have real mirrors, so it can have a good resolution, which makes the already very sensitive telescope suddenly have an imaging ability that can resolve space, which is an improvement in capability.
it is understood that the fast core array will effectively improve its resolution, precise positioning and fine mapping capabilities, greatly expand the existing scientific research field, and play a major role in gravitational wave events, fast radio bursts, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, black hole tidal disruption events, etc. in addition to astrophysics research, the fast core array can also play a role in deep space exploration such as near-earth object early warning and deep space satellite communications, playing an important strategic support role in my country's aerospace field.
