according to huang bin, director of the water ecology and environment division of the beijing municipal ecology and environment bureau, last year, the city's water ecological environment was generally good, with abundant aquatic species and widespread indigenous fish. more than half of the rivers and more than 70% of the reservoirs were rated as having good water ecological environment quality. in the first half of 2024, 29 of the city's 37 national test sections reached class iii or above water quality, accounting for 78.4%, with no class v sections, dynamically meeting the national annual assessment requirements.

at present, the city has planned more than 500 drinking water source protection areas. carry out annual surveys and assessments of the environmental conditions of drinking water source protection areas, special law enforcement, and dynamically clean up and rectify environmental problems that affect water source safety. since 2021, miyun reservoir has continued to maintain a high water level of about 3 billion cubic meters of water storage and safe operation, and has cumulatively replenished more than 1.8 billion cubic meters of water to the downstream ecology, maintaining stable class ii water quality. the water quality of guanting reservoir has been significantly improved, and the average annual water quality in 2023 will reach class iii standards.
beijing and hebei will implement a new round of horizontal compensation agreement for miyun reservoir, compensating hebei 850 million yuan from 2021 to 2023; to promote horizontal compensation for guanting reservoir, on august 30, 2023, the governments of beijing and hebei officially signed the "horizontal ecological compensation agreement for water source protection in the yongding river basin upstream of guanting reservoir (2023-2025)", working together to protect good water upstream and deliver clean water downstream.
regular water surveys and monitoring are conducted at more than 200 locations throughout the city.
beijing continues to implement the water environment regional compensation policy, using economic means to urge all districts in the basin to fulfill their responsibilities for water ecological protection and restoration, "get money for good water, pay for bad water", and promote the continuous improvement of the city's water ecological environment quality. starting from 2023, a new round of water ecological regional compensation will be implemented, coordinating the three types of indicators of water resources, water environment, and water ecology, establishing a two-way compensation mechanism, and promoting water flow, water environment cleanliness, and water ecological restoration.
beijing's five major rivers have become "flowing rivers" for three consecutive years and flow into the sea, and the water ecological environment along the rivers has been significantly restored. the underground water level in the city's plain areas has risen by 11.01 meters for eight consecutive years, providing basic conditions for the protection and construction of beautiful rivers and lakes.
