regarding the yi river, gu yanwu, a scholar in the late ming dynasty, explained it in his "records of shandong archaeology":

to the southwest of the mountain, there is water flowing out of a valley... the water is on the left of haoli mountain, and there is a bridge across it, called the naihe bridge. it is said that the souls of the dead cannot cross it, so it is called the naihe river.
