according to ecuadorian media reports on september 22, the country's national disaster management secretariat announced that 19 of the country's 24 provinces have entered a red alert state. this measure is taken to protect people and infrastructure as the country faces the worst drought in 61 years.
it is understood that under the red alert state, ecuador will activate the national emergency operations committee to coordinate emergency disaster reduction and response operations, and implement emergency plans to fill resource gaps and respond to possible major impacts.
due to factors such as insufficient rainfall, ecuador is currently facing problems such as drought, water shortage, forest fires, etc., which have affected agriculture, hydropower generation, water supply and food security.
it is reported that in the past 27 days, a total of 23,453 hectares of land in 21 provinces of ecuador have been affected by forest fires; from august 23 to september 18, a total of 1,337 forest fires were recorded, 284 more than the same period last year.
