lingnan university honours outstanding scholars for outstanding achievements in research and knowledge transfer

lingnan university (lu) held the “research excellence and knowledge transfer awards ceremony 2024” today (20 september) to recognise 46 academics and researchers for their outstanding performance in academic research and knowledge transfer, and their contributions to improving the quality of life of the public and society.

this year, the university received 39 funding projects from the research grants council (rgc) in the research grants scheme, with a total amount of hk$24.4 million, a record high, an increase of 17% from last year's hk$20.8 million, the highest amount of funding ever. in addition, lingnan university also achieved outstanding performance in the rgc postdoctoral fellowship scheme. among the nine outstanding applicants nominated this year, seven were successful in the scholarship, with a success rate of 78%.

the awards presented at the ceremony were "outstanding research achievement award", "young research achievement award", and "research and knowledge transfer project fund award". among them, the science teaching and research group of the interdisciplinary school won seven awards, including two lingnan university research projects with the highest funding amount: "calibrating mixed nutritional spectra: quantifying nutrient input and cycle in three corals with different nutritional strategies" by assistant professor inga elizabeth conti-jerpe, and "sources of tetrodotoxin in hong kong newts" by assistant professor liu yanqin. in addition, assistant professor huang genghua of the school of graduate studies' research "when digitalization meets financialization: different strategies of local governments in china in the social policy reform of platform workers" received a full score of 5 points from the rgc review panel (table 1).

the award presentation ceremony was attended by ms. kan su-fan, assistant secretary general (research) of the university grants committee, who officiated together with dr. wong chi-kwong, chairman of the court and representative of the lingnan education institution, professor chin sze-chiu, president and wai kei-chou chair professor of data science of lingnan university, and professor yao xin, vice-president (research and innovation) and tong tin sun chair professor of machine learning of lingnan university.

in his welcome speech, president qin sizhao congratulated all the award-winning scholars and said that lingnan university has been constantly innovating in the digital age and has achieved many important results in the past year, including the establishment of the lingnan institute for advanced study and the school of data science, as well as the recruitment of 15 world-renowned scholars through the "lingnan 60 global scholars recruitment" program, which has achieved a quarter of the goal. so far, 14% of the university's scholars are among the "top 2% of scientists in the world" at stanford university in the united states. in addition, all first-year students in the new academic year have begun to learn generative artificial intelligence as a compulsory course to enhance artificial intelligence literacy and critical thinking skills to cope with the impact of artificial intelligence in daily life and work.

president qin said: "we emphasize the importance of innovative education and put forward a new goal of building an influential liberal arts and science research university in the digital age. the university should not only provide a wide range of knowledge education, but also strengthen scientific research capabilities so that students can develop innovative thinking in academic exploration. in addition, the university emphasizes the importance of integrating liberal arts and science, providing a comprehensive education that combines humanities and scientific knowledge. this educational model not only cultivates students' comprehensive qualities, but also provides a solid foundation for them to adapt and innovate in a changing professional environment in the future, and to become more future leaders."

lingnan university president professor qin sizhao delivers a welcome speech

dr. wong chi-kwong, chairman of the lingnan university court and representative of the lingnan education institution, said in his opening speech that lingnan will consolidate its existing strengths and ensure that its research and knowledge transfer projects have a profound and meaningful impact on society. he said: "we are now vigorously cultivating talents and promoting groundbreaking research that benefits society. the university promotes an integrated education of arts and sciences that inspires scholars to solve problems with innovation and creativity, and use technology to bring changes to mankind through interdisciplinary knowledge. in the future, lingnan will continue to leverage its strengths in humanities, business and social sciences, while exploring new fields such as data science, artificial intelligence, carbon neutrality, and environmental sustainability, so that scholars can continue to explore solutions that benefit future society."

in his closing remarks, professor yao xin, vice-president (research and innovation) and tong tin sun chair professor of machine learning at lingnan university, shared the university’s new progress in collaboration with different strategic partners. he said: “lingnan has made encouraging progress in areas such as artificial intelligence and environmental sustainability. these new research areas have opened the door for us to collaborate with partners outside the university, including establishing several strategic agreements with key enterprises in shandong and a major partnership with the state key laboratory of northeastern university. in addition, lingnan’s status as a supporting institution in hong kong and macao granted by the national natural science foundation of china has provided scholars with rich opportunities. we have also welcomed the first winner of the national natural science foundation of china - young scientist fund project.”

professor yao added that the university will continue to be committed to promoting the united nations sustainable development goals and will continue to publish influential academic and research programs to achieve these global goals.
