pakistan formally applied to join the brics in november 2023. islamabad specifically pointed out that it hopes moscow will provide assistance on this issue.
the brics cooperation mechanism was launched in 2006 and was initially composed of brazil, russia, india and china. south africa joined in 2011, and iran, saudi arabia, egypt, the united arab emirates and ethiopia joined in 2024. from january 1, 2024, russia will serve as the rotating chair of the brics.
