iPhone 16

according to bloomberg news on september 19, beijing time, the european union is about to issue a warning to apple, requiring it to open its highly closed iphone operating system to competitors, otherwise it will eventually face huge fines.

people familiar with the matter said that the european commission, the eu regulator, will announce under the eu's newly passed digital markets directive (dma) that apple must comply with strict new dma regulations to make its operating system fully compatible with other companies' technologies.

the eu's announcement, which falls short of a formal investigation, is aimed at forcing apple to redesign its services to allow competitors access to the iphone's operating system. one of the goals of the dma is to ensure other developers can access key iphone features, such as siri voice commands and payment chips.

however, if apple does not comply with the dma's provisions, the eu may later decide to launch a formal investigation, which could ultimately result in a hefty fine of up to 10% of apple's annual global turnover.

as of press time, the european commission declined to comment. apple has not yet commented. (author/xiao yu)
