tesla employees donated $42,824 to harris' presidential campaign and $24,840 to trump's campaign, according to opensecrets, a nonpartisan nonprofit that tracks u.s. campaign contributions and lobbying data. spacex employees donated $34,526 to harris and $7,652 to trump. social media platform x employees donated $13,213 to harris and less than $500 to trump. opensecrets' data includes donations from company employees, owners and their immediate families. campaign finance laws prohibit companies from donating to federal campaigns themselves.

while those donations are relatively small in campaign fundraising terms, they suggest that employees’ political leanings are out of sync with musk’s own positions.as the world's richest man, musk supported trump on x and refuted left-leaning ideas as a "woke virus."

musk supported biden in the 2020 presidential election, but has since moved to the right.trump has said he would appoint musk to lead a government efficiency commission if he wins the nov. 5 election.

many of musk’s employees work in california, a democratic stronghold, said ross gerber, a tesla shareholder and ceo of gerber kawasaki wealth and investment management, who is also an investor in x.

in july, musk said he would move the headquarters of x and spacex from california to texas after california passed a gender recognition law that he called "the straw that broke the camel's back." gerber noted that such a relocation could result in a large loss of potential talent in california.
