xinhua news agency, united nations, september 18 (reporter pan yunzhao) the 10th emergency special session of the united nations general assembly passed a resolution with an overwhelming vote on the 18th, demanding that israel end its illegal occupation of palestinian territory within the next 12 months.

the vote that day was 124 in favor, 14 against, and 43 abstentions. the resolution requires israel to end its illegal presence in the occupied palestinian territories within 12 months of the adoption of the resolution and promptly fulfill all legal obligations it should assume under international law, including obligations imposed by the international court of justice. the resolution requires israel to withdraw all military forces from the occupied palestinian territories; end its illegal policies and actions, including immediately stopping all new settlement activities and withdrawing all settlers from the occupied palestinian territories; return palestinian land and other real estate; and allow all palestinians displaced during the occupation to return to their original places of residence.

the resolution also calls on all states to fulfill their obligations under international law, in particular those imposed by the international court of justice, including through joint and individual actions to promote the right of the palestinian people to self-determination.

the draft resolution was proposed by palestine and co-sponsored by more than 20 countries. introducing the draft resolution on the 17th, palestinian permanent observer to the united nations riad mansour said that the draft text is based on international law and seeks fundamental ways to hold people accountable and achieve justice. he called for the establishment of an independent palestinian state with east jerusalem as its capital based on the 1967 borders.
