beijing, sept. 18 (xinhua) -- south koreans received a record 280.4 million spam text messages and calls on their mobile phones in the first eight months of this year, despite the government's efforts to curb spam messages and advertisements, data released by the national assembly on monday showed.

the number of spam text messages and calls in south korea has surged in recent years. relevant parties have taken measures to deal with it since the beginning of this year, including formulating stricter regulations on group text messages. according to current laws, once communication service providers discover illegal group text messages or calls on the network, they must take action, such as suspending the communication service of the number, otherwise they may face a fine of up to 30 million won (about 160,000 yuan).
