recently, the boston athletic association of the united states announced the registration data for the 2025 boston marathon.

during the bq (boston marathon qualification) registration period (september 9-september 13), a total of 36,406 runners from 120 countries and regions around the world submitted applications, setting a record in the history of the boston marathon.

bq, the full name of boston qualification, is the registration qualification standard for the boston marathon. to obtain bq, runners must participate in marathon events certified by aims (association of international marathons and road runners) or usa track and field and achieve results that meet the registration standards for the boston marathon. due to the limited number of places in the competition, not all runners who obtain bq can qualify for the boston marathon. previously, 11,039 applicants for the 2024 boston marathon did not pass the review. in the next few weeks, the organizing committee will conduct a qualification review of runners applying for the 2025 boston marathon and send a confirmation notice in early october.

along with the surge in registration numbers, the boston marathon also announced that the bq line for 2026 will be further improved.

after a comprehensive analysis of the boston marathon's years of participation data, qualification results and global marathon participation, the organizing committee announced adjustments to the 2026 boston marathon's eligibility criteria for athletes aged 18-59. the qualifying scores for runners in this age range have all increased by a full 5 minutes, with the qualifying score for male runners aged 18-34 reaching 2 hours and 55 minutes.
