on september 12, 2024, the launch ceremony of the new book "reasonable use of the internet to achieve the future" - "youth blue book: china's internet usage report for minors (2024)" and the award ceremony for outstanding shortlisted cases of youth science and technology innovation and development, hosted by china business news and co-organized by the media communication and youth development research center of the institute of journalism and communication of the chinese academy of social sciences, was held in beijing.

at the launch ceremony, representatives from the institute of journalism and communication of the chinese academy of social sciences, the youth rights protection department of the central committee of the communist youth league, the united nations children's fund and other institutions, together with representatives from companies such as tencent group, douyu, x.d. inc., tuyou games, and shengqu games gathered together. in the roundtable sharing session with the theme of "working together to create a cyberspace suitable for the growth of young people", douyu's vice president of public affairs du sen, and china business news editorial board member and editor-in-chief of the tmt group li zhenghao, tuyou games vice president zhang yao and other guests discussed the live broadcast platform's initiatives in protecting young people.
what kind of internet habits should internet natives have to be healthy? what work have companies done to guide young people to use the internet in a healthy way? what other explorations will be carried out? during the roundtable discussion, du sen mentioned the "youth mode" that douyu has been implementing for a long time. this mode is a content rating system launched by douyu in october 2019. every time it is started, the douyu app/pc will actively launch a "youth mode" setting pop-up reminder. in this mode, the default usage time for underage users is 40 minutes. after reaching this time on the same day, a 4-digit password is required to continue using it. 22:00-6:00 every day is a disabled period to ensure that minors have enough sleep time. the live broadcast room as a whole maintains a pure video streaming viewing mode, and interactive entertainment consumption is not possible.
du sen believes that internet platforms should adopt a combination of blocking and loosening in the face of teenagers' strong sense of autonomy and curiosity. douyu strictly restricts or filters out content that is not suitable for teenagers through the "teen mode" on the one hand, and on the other hand, it continuously enriches the exclusive content pool of the teen mode and launches more healthy, positive and diverse content to help teenagers understand the world. "we hope to explore more content that is in line with the times and the growth environment of teenagers."
platform model + public welfare care, douyu handed in the answer sheet for youth protection
in addition to the "youth mode", douyu has launched multiple platform measures around youth protection. first, during the registration phase, douyu does not provide online anchor account registration services for minors under the age of 16, and sets up three firewalls of "real-name verification + face recognition + manual review" to intercept minors who do not meet the requirements during the account registration phase, and strictly regulate minors from conducting online live broadcast activities.
at the same time, the platform has increased the recommendation of high-quality content through the homepage and other methods, enhanced the pop-up warning function of the entire site, highlighted the healthy use of the internet by minors in a prominent position, and added instructions for minors to prohibit consumption on the pages/pop-ups of all paid links. this year, in response to the "minors' internet protection regulations" which will officially take effect on january 1, 2024, douyu has comprehensively upgraded the content review standards, strengthened the handling and punishment of illegal content involving teenagers, severely cracked down on online information that endangers the physical and mental health of teenagers, and launched the "one-click protection" function to prevent minors from cyberbullying and cyber violence.
since 2015, douyu has also launched a series of public welfare projects around youth protection, including working with the china children and teenagers' foundation to set up the "douyu public welfare special fund" and donating 3 million yuan to help special groups such as poor out-of-school girls and children of public security heroes. from 2021 to 2024, douyu will hold the "protecting seedlings and reading plan" for four consecutive years, donating excellent extracurricular reading materials to children and calling for attention to children's reading.
in september this year, under the guidance of the guangzhou civil affairs bureau, douyu joined hands with caring partners such as guangdong xinkuai news agency to jointly hold the 2024 "sui ai tong xiang·mid-autumn dream action" party, sending gifts to children in difficult situations, migrant children, left-behind children and their families, and invited popular anchor xiao shujie to make moon cakes with the families on site and tour the guangzhou zoo aquarium. during tencent's "99 charity day", douyu also joined hands with tencent charity, china rural development foundation, sunshine future foundation and others to jointly carry out the "embrace-rural aesthetic education plan". shenzhen dyg e-sports player qian cheng, a member of douyu, served as a charity ambassador and went to heping middle school in yuzhong county, gansu province to conduct interesting interactive exchanges with the children.
while douyu is creating a safe online space for young people through a series of platform models and public welfare support initiatives, it also hopes to give full play to the positive role of the internet platform and work with all sectors of society to create a network ecology and social environment that is beneficial to the healthy growth of young people, and to safeguard their all-round development.
