the united nations special coordinator for lebanon, janine hennis-plasschaert, called for calm after attacks across lebanon on tuesday killed at least nine people, including children, and injured thousands, many seriously.

according to media reports, the coordinated attack targeted the hezbollah militia, with hundreds of electronic pagers belonging to members of the group exploding after receiving a message at the same time. it is said that israeli intelligence agencies managed to place explosives and detonation switches in 3,000 pagers purchased by hezbollah.

a deeply worrying escalation

"today's developments mark an extremely concerning escalation in an already unacceptably volatile situation," hennis-plasschaert said in a statement.

she reminded all relevant actors that, under international law, civilians are not targets and must be protected at all times, stressing that “even a single civilian casualty is unacceptable”.

she urged all parties concerned to "refrain from any further actions or belligerent rhetoric that could provoke a wider conflict that no one can afford."

hennis-plasschaert stressed the urgency of restoring calm and called on all parties concerned to make stability a top priority as "the stakes are too high to allow any mistakes."
