as of september 1, there were 95,119 centenarians in japan, an increase of 2,980 from last year. among the centenarians, 83,958 were women, accounting for about 88%, and 11,161 were men.
the oldest living person in japan is ms. itooka tomiko, who is 116 years old and lives in ashiya city, hyogo prefecture. the oldest male person is mizuno kiyotaka, who is 110 years old and lives in iwata city, shizuoka prefecture.
nationwide, japan has 76.49 centenarians per 100,000 people. shimane prefecture has the highest rate of centenarians for 12 consecutive years, with 159.54 per 100,000 people, while saitama prefecture has the lowest rate, at 45.81.
the data also showed that the average life expectancy for japanese women in 2023 was 87.14 years and for men was 81.09 years.
japan began this survey in 1963, when there were only 153 centenarians in the country. as medical and nursing levels improved, the number of centenarians in japan increased year by year, exceeding 1,000 in 1981, exceeding 10,000 in 1998, exceeding 50,000 in 2012, and exceeding 90,000 in 2022.
