on september 14, jin shijie was a guest at sichuan observation, sharing the wisdom and touching stories in his play. the play "the last 14 tuesdays" will be performed at chengdu city concert hall on september 15 and 16. in this issue, star friends invited him to personally reveal the stories behind the scenes and share his unique insights on life and art.
"the last 14 tuesdays" tells a story: mickey, a sports columnist, lost himself in his many ideals 16 years after graduation. he accidentally saw his college professor molly on tv. at that time, molly suffered from als, which was incurable and only had a few months left to live. mickey decided to set off to meet the professor.
molly used the remaining time to teach his life experience and feelings to this sophisticated and materialistic student. he used 14 tuesdays to start a series of life dialogues. there was no textbook or reading list for this course, but many topics were discussed, including love, work, family, community, forgiveness, old age and death.
there are only two actors in the play, jin shijie plays the seriously ill professor morley, and bu xueliang plays the utilitarian student. when death is approaching, have you ever thought that we can choose another way to get along with it - "living towards death".
although he plays the role of a "teacher", jin shijie does not want to preach to the audience. he prefers to show more fun on stage. he said that comedy often makes actors think about the play because it has to meet the audience's expectations and make a simple scene or story full of internal and unexpected conflicts and tensions.
when talking about the story of the play he starred in, jin shijie mentioned that when he first read the original novel, he had no intention of acting in it. he thought that such a beautiful story should only exist in black and white, so as not to become a "chicken soup for the soul" type of game. later, after reading the adapted script, he changed his mind and acted in it for thirteen years.
"the script was adapted very well, so well that i taught a screenwriting class in college and used clips as teaching materials, asking students to analyze why the script was written in this way, what its structure was, and the various cause-and-effect relationships." jin shijie told us that as his relationship with his co-actor became more and more harmonious, the audience's response became more and more favorable, proving that his judgment was correct and that it was an excellent script.
after more than 300 performances, jin shijie still has a vivid feeling about this play. "after each performance, i still feel relieved and take a deep breath, but it feels very comfortable, and there is a sense of fulfillment that comes from fighting a good battle." he said that this play is a journey of life. just like he respects life and this story, he respects it. "if you are mickey, and we are acting on stage, i can read in your eyes every second whether your current state is real or fake. this is an important thing."
