september 15th is the 12th "beijing wetland day". the reporter learned from the tongzhou district gardening and greening bureau thatthe total wetland area in the urban sub-center has reached 5,574 hectares, forming wetland spaces such as guyanfangdian, beiyunhe, and chaobai river.

qin tao, deputy district head of tongzhou district, introduced that in recent years, tongzhou has strictly implemented the classification and grading management of wetlands, improved the wetland protection system, scientifically planned the protection and utilization of wetlands, and delineated different levels of protection areas to achieve effective protection and high-quality development of wetland resources. up to now, the total area of wetlands in the sub-center of the city is 5,574.58 hectares, which are divided into five categories: river surface, inland tidal flat, pond surface, dry canal, and ditch. among them, there is one beijing-level wetland and 125 district-level wetlands.
at present, tongzhou district has initially established a wetland spatial layout of "one area, two belts and three zones", including the guyanfangdian wetland area, the "north canal" wetland zone, the "chaobai river" wetland zone, the north city wetland zone, the sub-center wetland zone and the tongwulang wetland zone.
the restoration and expansion of wetlands will allow more animals and plants to settle down. in 2023, the biodiversity survey and assessment of the sub-center of the city recorded a total of 146 bird species belonging to 17 orders and 42 families, 5 orders, 5 families, 8 genera and 8 species of mammals, and 5 families and 8 species of native amphibians and reptiles. among them are the first-class national protected animals - the great bustard and the white-tailed sea eagle, in addition to 19 second-class national protected animals and 50 key protected wild animals in beijing.
sha haijiang, deputy director of the municipal bureau of landscape and greening, said:at present, the city's wetland area has exceeded 60,000 hectares. since the 14th five-year plan, the city has restored more than 2,300 hectares of wetlands, providing a growth habitat for nearly 50% of beijing's plant species and 76% of its wild animal species., helping beijing become one of the most biodiverse metropolises in the world.
