after six months of screening and the exciting competition of the regional finals, the top three teams in the chinese mainland region of the dyson design award 2024 have emerged. they all focus on the field of medical health, have a deep insight into the actual needs of different groups in society, and have brought original solutions with the clever integration of innovative thinking and multiple technologies.
the champion was the work of tongji university's zheng qingyun team - virtual tactile clothing. this invention is tailor-made for people with visual and hearing impairments. through electrotactile rendering technology, they can "feel" sound waves through touch. the software rehabilitation gloves of south china university of technology's li yuanjing team won the second place. its rehabilitation system, which combines emg electromyographic signal sensors and ai visual assistance technology, provides rehabilitation technology for patients with hand dysfunction due to nerve damage. at the same time, it can also share patient data with rehabilitation hospitals to achieve efficient and sustainable patient management. the third place was the pharyngeal rhyme swallowing disorder rehabilitation training platform of shanghai jiaotong university's zhu zhaopeng team. it consists of neck wearable hardware and psd health management software, providing accurate assessment and home rehabilitation training programs for patients with swallowing disorders.
hu hongfei, head of dyson's hardware engineering team, has served as a judge for the competition many times and witnessed the birth of many original works. he said, "we are very happy that the dyson design award has become an important part of this virtuous cycle - providing a stage for these potential original innovative forces to show their talents, and we look forward to them being able to bring greater social value to these original designs in the future." so far, among the winners of the dyson design award worldwide, more than 60% of the projects have been successfully implemented in different forms, driving society towards a better future.
in order to inspire and cultivate local future inventors, dyson is committed to promoting the deep integration of industry, academia and research, and exploring new models of scientific and creative talent education with local universities from a new perspective. at present, dyson has joined hands with the school of design of shanghai jiao tong university to carry out educational cooperation projects, and will soon open two new courses for design master students to inspire the young generation of scientific and creative talents to have innovative thinking oriented to problem solving and a practical spirit without fear of failure.
