beijing, sept. 12 (xinhua) -- iranian president massoud pezhechyan arrived in baghdad, the capital of iraq, on the morning of september 11, and was greeted by iraqi prime minister mohammad hijau sudani at the airport. this is pezhechyan's first visit abroad since he took office in july, hoping to further deepen the economic and security relations between the two countries and ease the pressure of western sanctions.

according to iranian official media reports, pezehiziyan intends to sign a number of bilateral cooperation agreements during this trip. iranian foreign minister seyed abbas araghchi, who is accompanying him on the trip, said before leaving: "we have many areas of cooperation, involving political, regional... and security issues."

the three-day visit will see senior iraqi officials and pezehiziyan will visit a cross-border railway project, which was launched in september last year and will build a 32-kilometer railway from the southern iraqi port city of basra to the iranian border town of shalamchieh and connect to the iranian railway network.
