"smoking is prohibited in public places, should the same management measures be taken for e-cigarettes and traditional tobacco?" "at present, should charitable donations from the tobacco industry be restricted?"... from september 7th to september 8th, the 2024 college students' tobacco control debate invitational tournament officially kicked off. 24 teams from universities across the country gathered together to compete in a fierce group round-robin competition around the topic of tobacco control.
the 2024 college students' tobacco control debate invitational tournament is hosted by beijing municipal health commission, beijing patriotic health campaign committee office, co-organized by beijing center for disease control and prevention, and undertaken by communication university of china. this event aims to thoroughly implement the relevant requirements of the tobacco control action of the healthy china action (2019-2030), give full play to the active role of college students in tobacco control actions, guide college students to establish a correct view of health, and enhance their social responsibility to actively participate in creating a smoke-free environment.
since the launch of this competition, it has attracted enthusiastic registration from teachers and students from 24 universities across the country, including peking university, tsinghua university, renmin university of china, beijing normal university, xi'an jiaotong university, university of international relations, wuhan university, and china university of political science and law. they will compete in the two-month competition schedule, including group round-robin, elimination, semi-finals and finals, to compete for the championship and awards such as the best debater in a single game and the best debater of the whole process.
it is reported that the theme of the 37th world no tobacco day this year is "protecting young people from the harm of tobacco". at present, youth tobacco control has gradually become the focus of tobacco control work. the organizers introduced that this event promoted tobacco control in the form of a debate, breaking through the traditional health education model, hoping to give full play to the main role of young groups in tobacco control actions, so that the core information of health education can reach the target audience more effectively, thereby bringing about changes in knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, etc.
the debate topics for this competition are collected from participating teams and set by the organizers. the debate content will be based on "thinking" to distinguish the harm of tobacco and spread tobacco control knowledge; with "communication" as the goal, pay attention to the current situation of tobacco control in china and tell the story of tobacco control in china; with "cooperation" as the orientation, encourage young people to join the tobacco control volunteer team, play a role in protecting their own health and the health of people around them, and enhance college students' sense of social responsibility to actively participate in creating a "smoke-free culture".
experts and scholars from the fields of education, medicine, law, and other fields, as well as well-known debaters and competition consultants who have participated in domestic and international debate competitions many times, are invited to serve as judges for this competition. the jury will conduct a comprehensive evaluation based on the knowledge and theoretical reserves demonstrated by the debaters on both sides in this event, the breadth and depth of their understanding of the topic, the completeness and self-consistency of the overall logical structure of the argument, the rationality and sufficiency of the argument and its social significance, the debate skills and tactics, the language organization and expression skills, and the teamwork ability.
it is reported that 8 teams from communication university of china, tsinghua university, nankai university, wuhan university, capital normal university, northwestern polytechnical university, china university of political science and law, and minzu university of china advanced from the group round-robin stage to the knockout stage to be held on september 21 to september 22. the semifinals and finals will be held in mid-to-late october.
