xinhua news agency, hong kong, september 9 (xi tianqi) the hong kong airport authority announced on the 9th that the reconfigured hong kong international airport's middle runway completed a test flight, marking that the three runways are ready for full operation.
the airport authority said that they cooperated with the civil aviation department of the hong kong special administrative region government and the flight inspection center of the civil aviation administration of china to conduct test flights on the middle runway in august to ensure that the relevant air navigation service equipment, flight procedures and ground lighting system of the airfield of the middle runway meet the standards of the international civil aviation organization. the airport authority will continue to aim to start full operation of the three runways as scheduled before the end of this year.
the airport authority said the three-runway system will provide the hong kong international airport with the capacity to meet the long-term air traffic demand of 120 million passengers and 10 million tonnes of cargo by 2035, consolidating the hong kong international airport's position as a leading aviation hub in the region.
after the north runway of hong kong international airport comes into service in november 2022, the central runway will be temporarily closed for reconfiguration to accommodate the development of the three-runway system.
