xinhua news agency, geneva, september 10 (reporter chen binjie) during the world trade organization's 2024 public forum, the think tank for china and globalization held a seminar entitled "leveraging china's green transformation to mitigate global climate change: perspectives, opportunities and challenges" in geneva, switzerland on the 10th, focusing on trade policies and climate change response and china's positive contributions in this field.

the seminar was hosted by wang huiyao, chairman of the center for china and globalization, and representatives from china, the united states, europe and africa discussed the topic. the seminar received a warm response and attracted more than 100 representatives from wto members, media and think tanks.

yi xiaozhun, former vice minister of china's ministry of commerce and former deputy director-general of the world trade organization, said at the seminar that china's new energy industry has made positive contributions to global emission reduction. in 2022, china's wind power and photovoltaic products helped other countries reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 573 million tons, providing consumers in various countries with more affordable new energy products, which helped relevant countries ease inflationary pressure.

yi xiaozhun pointed out that the development of china's new energy industry does not rely on government subsidies, and subsidies can never create a healthy industry. the development of china's new energy industry is more driven by fierce market competition, rapid technological iteration and expanding market size. government policies have played a "signal light" role in encouraging research and development, building infrastructure and cultivating consumer markets. at the same time, some countries have adopted protectionist policies, which have had a serious negative impact on global efforts to address climate change.

amina mohammed, former kenyan foreign minister, stressed that the green transformation of african countries will bring huge opportunities in renewable energy, infrastructure, metal processing, etc., but it is necessary to attract foreign investment and technology and realize local production capacity. strengthening international cooperation is crucial, and subsidy wars and protectionism will bring challenges to africa.
