who is winning?

failed gambling on stones, lost nearly 120,000 yuan

"one cut makes you poor, one cut makes you rich, and one cut makes you clothed." this saying in the jade industry reveals the risks of trading raw stones. traditional offline raw stone trading still requires professionals to carefully identify them. however, some lawless elements take advantage of the mentality of some consumers to "gamble with a small amount and win a big amount" and move "gambling on stones" into the invisible and intangible online live broadcast room.

"this is a rough stone mined from a mine in southeast asia. the original price was several thousand to tens of thousands. today's low price is a reward to the fans in the live broadcast room. whether it will rise or fall, one cut will tell!" mr. yang, who lives in pudong new district, shanghai, stared at the live broadcast room on his mobile phone where the jade rough stone was being cut. the high-pitched voice of the anchor stimulated his adrenaline. if it was cut into "green goods", it would be "rising", and if it was cut into white, it would be "falling". seeing the anchor's flashlight shining on the stone and reflecting green light, mr. yang, who was immersed in the warm atmosphere of the live broadcast room, also paid and said to the customer service: "cut!"

however, mr. yang did not wait for good luck to come. not long after, the anchor told him that "the stone was cut down", which also meant that the money he had just invested was instantly lost. in 2023, mr. yang participated in "gambling on stones" in such a live broadcast room many times in a row, and lost a total of nearly 120,000 yuan.

is it a rise or a fall?

only a thought of the fraud gang

in march this year, the public security authorities discovered a gang using short video platforms to divert traffic and live broadcast through the wechat mini-program platform. they used fake jadeite raw stones prepared in advance as props, controlled the cutting structure, and defrauded money from live broadcast viewers in the name of "gambling on jadeite". on march 23, zhang and 13 other suspects were arrested.

the criminal gang headed by the suspect zhang is divided into four live broadcast teams, with members serving as front-end fan-attracting anchors, customer service, back-end fraud anchors, assistants, cutters, central control operations, and water army. the front-end fan-attracting anchors first broadcast live or post videos on short video platforms, and attract fans by selling jade polishing materials at low prices and giving small gifts. after a fan follows or comments, the customer service takes the opportunity to add the fan's wechat and privately recommend a small program specifically used for "gambling on stones" live broadcasts to the fan, thus kicking off a "killing customer" gambling game.

according to lao zhang, the warehouse manager in the team, there are three kinds of "fake materials" in the warehouse, namely "double-headed materials", "fake leather materials" and "synthetic materials". "double-headed materials" are made by splicing two pieces of raw stone materials with one end of poor quality and the other end of good quality. the anchor can control the increase or decrease of the cutting through "double-headed materials". "fake leather materials" are made by spraying green paint and sticking sand on the outer layer to give a new layer of skin to the jade of poor quality. the anchor uses this "fake leather material" to pass off inferior materials as good ones. "synthetic materials" are made by re-bonding the raw stones with better appearance with glue and sand and gravel after being cut. each time, they are cut from the previous cut. they are "old actors" who appear repeatedly in the live broadcast room.

most victims took a wait-and-see attitude when they first entered the live broadcast room. however, what they didn't know was that the live broadcast room was responsible for heating up the atmosphere, and there were actually more "shills" participating in the "car pool" than fans. the so-called "car pool" is a way for multiple people to "group buy" a piece of raw stone. when there are no real fans participating and only "water army" is "car pooling", the anchor will cut the good end of the "double-headed material" and stage a "cut-up" dividend drama to stimulate customer participation. in addition, the fraud gang also used forged false dividend transaction records to show customers the "credibility" of the live broadcast room.

when the victim finally steps into the trap, the "killer" anchor begins to slowly tighten the "rope". in the first few rounds of "carpooling", the anchor will buy back the raw stones of the "carpooling" at a price slightly higher than the selling price, allowing the victim to occasionally make a small profit. after tasting the "sweetness", some victims choose to "charter a car for one person", that is, to buy a piece of raw stone by one person, and the result at this time is bound to be "cut down".

the fraud gang was prosecuted

after investigation, it was found that the live gambling group led by zhang and others used prop stones to control the gambling results and committed fraud, involving a total amount of more than 10.24 million yuan, and the victims who have reported the case suffered a total loss of more than 2.91 million yuan. on june 28 this year, the people's procuratorate of pudong new area, shanghai, filed a public prosecution against 13 criminal suspects of the gang for suspected fraud.

the prosecutor reminded: the criminal suspects took advantage of the victims' desire to get rich overnight. after being deceived, many victims still believed that they had simply failed in investment, so the reporting rate of such cases was not high. i hope that the general public will learn from this case, open their eyes, be wary of live broadcast gambling stone scams, and protect their wallets.
