the exhibition "ask the stone duanxi - liang peiyang's sixtieth life inkstone carving exhibition" was recently unveiled at beijing rongbaozhai building. the exhibition displays more than 100 duan inkstone masterpieces by liang peiyang, a master of chinese arts and crafts and a master of the four treasures of the chinese study, which embodies his artistic characteristics in terms of using the material in accordance with his artistic style, creative ideas, and fine carving.
it is reported that duan inkstone is the first of the four famous inkstones in china. it has been popular for thousands of years and has the characteristics of being delicate and warm, releasing ink more easily, storing ink without drying up, and being rich and colorful. the craftsmanship of making duan inkstone was selected into the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006.
liang peiyang was born in a family of inkstone carving in zhaoqing, guangdong. he followed his teachers to mine stones and identify duan inkstones. he focused on innovation based on the traditional duan inkstone craftsmanship, and incorporated the artistic conception of ancient poems into the design, making the duan inkstone not only a practical writing tool, but also a work of art.
at the opening ceremony, liang peiyang expressed the hope that through this exhibition, more visitors would learn about duan inkstone and feel the charm of china's excellent traditional culture.
