this year marks the 130th anniversary of the outbreak of the sino-japanese war of 1894 and the 10th anniversary of the underwater archaeological work on the sunken warships.
on september 17, 1894, the jingyuan warship sank in the laorenshi sea area in front of heidao town, zhuanghe, liaoning. after 130 years of seawater scouring, the once majestic jingyuan warship is now in ruins. in 2018, the underwater archaeological survey of the jingyuan warship was officially launched. the sea conditions at the location where it sank were turbid and visibility was very poor. according to feng lei, deputy research curator of the liaoning provincial institute of cultural relics and archaeology, when the visibility is bad, it is pitch dark, and when the visibility is good, it is only 50 cm.
through geophysical exploration, the archaeological team discovered the unique hull structure of the jingyuan ship - the ironclad fort structure. after diving and investigation, the team members confirmed that the ironclad fort was exposed on the surface of the seabed, the stern was inserted under the mud, and the hull was tilted. archaeological researchers later discovered that its bottom cabin was gone, the engine room was gone, and the dredging port, cinder port, and gangway were all upside down. from several pieces of evidence, it has basically been proved that it was upside down on the seabed.
based on the drawings and the underwater positioning system, they calculated the location and spent 20 consecutive days digging a 1.5-meter-deep exploration cave that could only accommodate one person.
feng lei recalled, "when i entered the cave, i used a flashlight to shine a little bit of light, and i could see that the characters were a little golden. they were painted in gold. anyway, i couldn't see them, so i turned off the flashlight and kept touching the characters with my hands. because the characters were very large, one meter wide, and you touch along the strokes, i felt that i closed my eyes unconsciously, and at that moment, i felt that i was suddenly transported to the battlefield in my mind. i felt that i could hear the sound of artillery and shouting, just like the feeling of being on a battlefield."
