according to japanese media reports on september 7, after the united states deployed a medium-range missile system in the philippines, u.s. army secretary christine wormuth said that the united states intends to deploy a medium-range missile system in japan for joint military exercises.

the japan times reported that wormuth said at an event in virginia earlier this week that she had discussed the deployment of the army's multi-domain task force, a new unit with the medium-range capable missile system known as typhon, during her visit to japan last month.

"i had a very pleasant visit to japan and had a great discussion with defense minister kihara minoru," wormuth said at a defense news conference on the 4th. "you know, i think we would be happy to see... multi-domain (task force)... be able to conduct (military exercises) outside of japan." she said.

"we have indicated to the japan self-defense forces our interest in this," wormuth said, stressing that any deployment would be "conducted at the pace of the japanese government."

in april, the u.s. military deployed the typhoon launcher in the indo-pacific region for the first time during a joint military exercise in the northern philippines, and the deployment project will be completed this month. the launcher is capable of firing tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of 1,600 kilometers and standard missile-6 (sm-6) air defense missiles.
