it home reported on september 8 that the mobile research team of security technology company mcafee has discovered a new type of mobile malware that attacks mnemonics by scanning images on the device that may contain mnemonics. a mnemonic is essentially a 12-word phrase that can help users recover their cryptocurrency wallets.

mcafee revealed that this android malware cleverly disguises itself as a variety of trustworthy applications, from banking and government services to tv streaming and utilities. however, once installed, these fake applications secretly collect the user's text messages, contacts and all stored images and send them to a remote server. they often distract users with endless loading screens and brief blank screens to hide their true activities.

mcafee has identified more than 280 fake apps involved in the scheme, which has been actively targeting south korean users since january 2024.

according to a previous report by it home, a report by blockchain research organization trm labs in july this year showed that global cryptocurrency thefts surged in the first half of 2024, with the amount more than double that of the same period last year. this is mainly attributed to a few large-scale attacks and rising cryptocurrency prices.

the report shows that as of june 24, 2024, hackers have stolen more than $1.38 billion worth of cryptocurrency this year (it home note: currently about 9.79 billion yuan), while in the same period of 2023 it was only $657 million (currently about 4.661 billion yuan). in addition, the average amount of a single theft this year is 50% higher than the same period last year.
