according to reuters, amazon officials revealed that the company plans to export small items from india this year, which is expected to reach about $5 billion, a significant increase from nearly $3 billion in 2023. these goods will be mainly supplied to the united states, the united kingdom and other markets.the move marks that amazon is accelerating the shift of its supply chain layout to india.

as one of the world's leading e-commerce giants, amazon's strategic adjustment highlights the growing importance of india in the global supply chain system, and also reflects the trend of multinational companies seeking to purchase from outside china.

another retail giant, walmart, is also not far behind, and plans to significantly increase its purchases from india from about $3 billion in 2020 to $10 billion by 2027. in an interview with reuters on thursday, amazon's global trade director bhupen wakankar made it clear that "india has become one of amazon's important sources of goods."

wakankar stressed that amazon is actively working with the indian ministry of commerce and trade associations to build close ties with thousands of small manufacturers across the country, covering a diversified industrial chain including textiles, jewelry, and household goods.

in recent years, amazon and walmart's flipkart have set off a wave of changes in the indian retail market.through billions of dollars of investment, flipkart has not only helped many small businesses expand their online sales channels, but also attracted a large number of consumers through large-scale promotions. however, the two companies have also faced criticism from the trade and political fields. the indian minister of commerce has accused them of predatory pricing and worried that the rapid development of the e-commerce industry will impact the domestic physical store economy.

last june, amazon announced that it would increase its total investment in india to $26 billion over the next decade, including a significant investment in its cloud business. wakankar further revealed that since launching the global sales plan in 2015, by the end of 2023, amazon has successfully helped about 150,000 small indian exporters directly sell goods worth about $8 billion to overseas markets, and set a goal to achieve a new milestone of $20 billion in total indian e-commerce exports by 2025.
