"food security and agricultural development have always been one of the important areas for china and african countries to jointly build the 'belt and road' and a priority direction of cooperation. under the strategic guidance of chinese and african leaders, china-africa cooperation in the agricultural field has flourished and achieved fruitful results," said xu jianping.
he introduced that the results of increasing agricultural production and income in africa are gratifying. china has built 24 agricultural technology demonstration centers in africa, promoting more than 300 advanced and practical technologies such as corn planting, vegetable cultivation, and cassava breeding, which have increased local crop yields by 30% to 60%. chinese hybrid rice has taken root in more than 20 african countries. taking madagascar as an example, china's hybrid rice promotion area has exceeded 75,000 hectares, with an average yield of 7.5 tons per hectare, more than three times the yield of local varieties. hybrid rice is printed on the largest denomination banknote in madagascar. juncao technology has been successfully applied in rwanda and has borne fruit, driving more than 30,000 people in rwanda to employment and collection, and is called "happy grass" by local people.
at the same time, xu jianping said that china-africa agricultural economic and trade cooperation has developed strongly. china attaches great importance to importing african specialty products, maintaining a growth rate of more than 10% for many consecutive years, and the import volume will reach us$5.32 billion in 2023. china has become the second largest export destination for agricultural products in africa. specialty products such as rwanda's dried peppers and coffee, kenya's avocados, and benin's pineapples have been placed on chinese tables on a regular basis, enriching the "vegetable basket" and "fruit plate" of chinese consumers, and also enriching the "purses" of african friends.
china is also actively promoting the modernization of african agriculture and expanding its agricultural investment in african countries. there are more than 200 chinese companies investing in the african agricultural sector, with a cumulative investment of more than us$1 billion, promoting the implementation of new formats such as smart agriculture and e-commerce trade in africa. while improving the efficiency of african agricultural production, china's agricultural plant protection drones also provide digital technology training and employment opportunities for african youth, helping to accelerate the formation of more stable agricultural industrial chains and supply chains.
in addition, according to xu jianping, the china-africa agricultural cooperation mechanism has been continuously improved. china has established agricultural cooperation mechanisms with 23 african countries and regional organizations and signed 72 bilateral and multilateral agricultural cooperation documents. since 2012, china has sent 45 batches of 432 agricultural experts to 11 african countries, trained more than 70,000 people in african countries, and taught nearly 1,000 practical agricultural technologies. in december 2019, the first china-africa agricultural cooperation forum was successfully held, the "sanya declaration of the china-africa agricultural cooperation forum" was adopted, and the china-africa union agricultural cooperation committee was established.
