experts call for the 2024 china heart conference
lifestyle medicine: a good way to treat chronic diseases
september of every year is the national healthy lifestyle promotion month.
on the morning of august 30, the 2024 china heart congress (chc) opened at the beijing international convention center. the theme of this year's conference is "healthy heart, healthy china: health first, high-quality development". the conference is hosted by the national center for cardiovascular diseases and others, and will share the latest academic research results in the field of cardiovascular disease online and offline.
academician hu shengshou, chairman of the conference, director of the national center for cardiovascular diseases, and president of the fuwai hospital of the chinese academy of medical sciences, said at the meeting that lifestyle medicine is the embodiment of the shift of the modern medical model from "disease-centered" to "health-centered", mainly including healthy diet, regular physical activity, smoking cessation and alcohol restriction, stress management, sleep management, social support, etc.
over the past 30 years, my country's achievements in health care have attracted worldwide attention, and the improvement in medical accessibility and quality index ranks first among middle-income countries. from 1990 to 2016, the life expectancy of chinese people increased from 67.0 years to 76.4 years, and the healthy life expectancy increased from 59.8 years to 67.9 years, showing a significant upward trend.
but at the same time, the incidence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases in my country are still rising, and the disease burden is not optimistic. at present, there are 330 million cardiovascular disease patients in china, and about 4.58 million people die from cardiovascular diseases each year. the "turning point" of the incidence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases in my country has not yet arrived, and the number of hospitalizations and hospitalization costs of cardiovascular disease patients are still increasing rapidly.
data from the world health organization shows that lifestyle accounts for 60% of the causes of chronic diseases.
"unhealthy lifestyle is the main reason affecting people's health." hu shengshou said that currently unhealthy lifestyle is prevalent among chinese residents. for example, the incidence of dyslipidemia is increasing year by year, but the awareness rate is only 30%; 80% of residents consume more than 12.5g of salt per day; and the obesity rate among the population is increasing year by year.
many domestic and foreign guidelines point out that lifestyle medicine is the core and cornerstone of disease prevention and treatment. for example, the european society of cardiology's cardiovascular disease guidelines emphasize that the most important way to prevent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout life. the chinese guidelines for the prevention of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases with a healthy lifestyle point out that a healthy lifestyle is the cornerstone of the prevention and management of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
feng xue, executive deputy director of the healthy lifestyle medicine center of the national center for cardiovascular disease, said that lifestyle medicine is an inevitable choice for the development model of modern medicine and the changes in the disease spectrum. we must actively popularize healthy lifestyles, promote the establishment of lifestyle medicine departments in public hospitals, encourage clinicians to prescribe "lifestyle prescriptions", and use modern communication technology and artificial intelligence to promote the development of lifestyle medicine.
my country has a good foundation for developing lifestyle medicine. the yellow emperor's classic of internal medicine states that "the ancients who knew the truth followed the principles of yin and yang, were in harmony with the art of numbers, ate and drank in moderation, had regular daily routines, and did not overwork. therefore, they were able to maintain their physical and spiritual health and live out their natural lifespans, passing away at the age of 100." this is consistent with the modern medical model and lifestyle concept we advocate. according to statistics, there are currently 7,570 health management (physical examination) institutions in 31 provincial-level administrative regions across the country, of which 1,313 are private institutions, accounting for 17%.
in september 2022, the national center for cardiovascular disease also took the lead in establishing the lifestyle medicine alliance, which currently has 122 units joined.
in the first half of this year, the national center for cardiovascular diseases and the institute of social research of the national development and reform commission jointly researched, wrote and released an industry report that is a milestone in china's lifestyle medicine. the national center for cardiovascular diseases has held the national lifestyle medicine conference for four consecutive years, building a communication and cooperation platform for professionals and industries, academics and transformation, problems and solutions, and exploring healthy lifestyle medicine suitable for the chinese population.
