youku white night theater's new work "border water past" is about to end. the play uses a unique border narrative theme and unit drama structure to extend the adventure story to overseas foreign lands. the compact and rigorous story line and vivid little characters make this play a "dark horse" this summer.
the play tells the story of a young man named shen xing (played by guo qilin) who accidentally drifts to a small border town. in the process of looking for his uncle, he meets uncle cai (played by wu zhenyu), a mysterious tycoon engaged in border trade, and starts the dangerous journey of "border water". the play is 21 episodes long and carries 21 unit stories such as "horror", "border water", "opening stones" and "puppet show". almost every episode opens a new map.
in order to give this fictional story a sense of reality, the series created a fictional border town through the artificial language "bomo", and piled up countless shooting details to restore the rough ecology of the "no man's land" in the southeast asian border from the aspects of language, living habits, clothing and even architecture. there are many "jargons" unique to the border in the play. for example, the "bianshui" in the title refers to the logistics business of transporting daily necessities for drug dealers. in the play, shen xing opens his cognition of the real world of the border town through the perspective of a bianshui driver.
"the past by the water" is the first drama produced by the famous filmmaker cao baoping. the director of the drama is the new director suan, whose first drama "madhouse" was also broadcast on youku. in cao baoping's view, "the past by the water" is a new breakthrough in genre and drama.
