according to afp on august 30, the german federal armed forces withdrew from an air force base under the control of the niger military government on the same day. so far, the federal armed forces have completely withdrawn from this turbulent sahel country.

it is reported that at the end of may, germany and niger reached a temporary agreement allowing germany to station troops at the air force base in the capital niamey until the end of august.

senior german and nigerien military officials read out a joint statement announcing the completion of the withdrawal.

the statement said the german army had evacuated 60 soldiers and 146 tons of equipment using five transport planes.

the statement added: "this withdrawal does not mark the end of niger's military cooperation with germany. in fact, both sides are committed to maintaining military relations."

the report mentioned that in july 2023, a coup took place in niger and president mohamed bazoum was overthrown. since then, the country has been ruled by a military government.
