the fifth china-singapore ministerial dialogue on climate change was successfully held

at the invitation of new zealand minister of climate change walter watts, minister of ecology and environment huang runqiu led a delegation to visit new zealand from august 26 to 28, 2024, and co-convened the fifth china-new zealand ministerial dialogue on climate change with walter watts in wellington.



this dialogue is a concrete measure to implement the consensus reached at the china-new zealand leaders' meeting in june 2024 on addressing climate change. the two sides conducted in-depth dialogue and exchanges on a wide range of topics, including their respective domestic climate policies, bilateral practical cooperation, and global climate governance. huang runqiu introduced my country's policies, actions, and progress in addressing climate change, expounded on its position on participating in multilateral processes such as climate change, biodiversity, and plastic pollution, and its views on the outcomes of the united nations climate change conference in baku (cop29), and put forward specific suggestions for further deepening china-new zealand bilateral climate policy dialogue and practical cooperation in the fields of carbon emissions trading, green finance, and nature-based solutions. he hoped that new zealand would create a fair and open market environment and provide convenient support for chinese companies to carry out green and low-carbon businesses in new zealand. wozniacki shared the new zealand government's latest climate strategy, work priorities, and progress in action, appreciated china's climate action results and leadership in multilateral processes, and expressed his willingness to strengthen policy exchanges and practical cooperation with china in the fields of carbon markets, renewable energy, electric vehicles, green finance, and nature-based solutions. new zealand welcomes the further development of china's new energy industry to inject new impetus into the global low-carbon transition, and also welcomes chinese companies to invest and cooperate in new zealand.


the two sides agreed that the consensus reached by the leaders of china and new zealand should be implemented, and the challenges of climate change should be jointly addressed with the international community, confidence and momentum should be injected into the multilateral climate process, and support should be given to azerbaijan, the presidency of cop29, to promote positive outcomes of the conference. the two sides will strengthen policy dialogue, communication and coordination, explore the updating of bilateral climate cooperation documents, share the opportunities for green and low-carbon transformation and development brought about by climate change, further enrich the connotation of the china-new zealand comprehensive strategic partnership, and contribute to the green, low-carbon and sustainable development of china, new zealand and the world. new zealand environment minister simmons, representatives of energy minister brown, and high-level representatives of the ministry of foreign affairs and trade and the ministry of business, innovation and employment participated in the dialogue.



during the visit to new zealand, huang runqiu and watts attended the dialogue on climate change and sustainable development held by the new zealand china council and delivered speeches, which further deepened the understanding of people from all walks of life in new zealand on my country's policy actions and results in addressing climate change, and enhanced mutual understanding and trust. huang runqiu also met with auckland mayor wynne and taupo mayor trevavas, and held dialogues with the new zealand geothermal association, the institute of geology and nuclear science, and others, exchanging views on topics such as low-carbon city construction, adaptation to climate change, water environment protection, and geothermal energy development.
