it home reported on august 31 that microsoft published a blog post yesterday (august 30), releasing the windows 11 build 27695 preview update for windows insider project members in the canary channel.

new features

new position for widget entry point on left-aligned taskbar

after the user chooses left alignment for the taskbar, the widget window button is moved to the left side of the system tray and will become wider. microsoft says this will allow users to see richer widget content on the taskbar.

additionally, when the user launches the widget panel, it will fly out from the right side instead of the left.

windows laps: recovering encrypted passwords during active directory recovery

microsoft has optimized the windows local administrator password solution (laps) and added the ability to recover encrypted passwords from active directory (ad) backup media, so that users can recover passwords even when there is no ad domain controller running.

windows laps encrypted passwords are much more secure than the traditional method of storing plain text passwords in active directory. windows laps password encryption is based on the cryptography api: the next generation data protection api (cng dpapi).

under normal operating conditions, the decryption key is always obtained from a running ad domain controller. when an unexpected disaster occurs, there may be no running ad domain controller.

users can now use the get-lapsadpassword powershell cmdlet to retrieve and decrypt windows laps encrypted passwords from active directory backup media mounted using ad snapshot browser (aka dsamain.exe) without requiring network interaction with any ad domain controllers.

this new improvement is implemented in the existing get-lapsadpassword powershell cmdlet. it home note: when both the -port and -recoverymode parameters are specified, any retrieved passwords will be automatically decrypted using the decryption key in the snapshot browser in a purely local operation.

optimization and improvement

starting from build 27691, the expiration date of the preview version of the canary channel is adjusted to september 15, 2025.

canary channel users are starting to see an estimated time their pcs will be offline when installing build 27695. the estimate will appear on the windows update settings page and through the start menu power button.

[notification recommendation]

users can now choose to turn off suggestions and disable notifications from certain apps. users can now press "..." in the notification to disable the notification, just like disabling other notifications, or you can go into the list of notification senders in settings > system > notifications and turn them off from there (called "notification suggestions" in the list).

[windows sharing]

microsoft is expanding the ability to easily share content from the windows share window to android devices. this feature requires you to pair your android device with your windows pc using the link to windows app on android and phone link on your pc.

microsoft has updated the widget panel to improve security and the api for creating widgets and feeds for users in the european economic area.

we fixed an issue where after pressing win+e, the screen reader might unexpectedly indicate that a pane has focus, or focus is not set at all in file explorer.

fixed an issue resulting in ctrl + f sometimes not launching a search in file explorer.

we fixed an issue where keyboard focus might sometimes be lost when pressing shift+tab in file explorer.

we fixed an issue resulting in screen readers not being able to prompt when opening or navigating items in the breadcrumb bar of an open or save dialog.

fixed an issue where the colors of the performance section were not displayed correctly in dark mode.

we fixed an issue that could sometimes cause windows sandbox to fail to launch with error 0x80070005.

fixed an issue where windows installation booting from the most recent installation media would not set itself as the default partition if another version of windows was installed.

fixed a potential issue causing dfrgui.exe (disk defragmentation and optimization) to fail in the previous preview with a sxshared_ucrt.dll not found error.

known issues

[conventional]

windows 11 ai+ pc users, please note that if you switch from the dev, release preview or retail versions to the canary channel, your pc will not be able to use windows hello passwords and biometrics, and you will not be able to log in to the pc, and will display error 0xd0000225 and the error message "something went wrong, your pin is not available."

this issue causes the emoji panel to close when trying to switch to the kaomoji and symbols section, or after selecting an emoji.
