cailianshe news, august 30 (editor: zhou ziyi)u.s. technology giant google said on thursday (august 29) that it will open its second data center in latin america in canelones, uruguay, south america, and invest more than us$850 million.

google opened its first data center in latin america in quiricula, near the chilean capital santiago, in 2015. at the time, the company invested an initial $150 million in the data center and an additional $140 million in 2018 for expansion.

in response to the growing demand for access to artificial intelligence, google said in a blog post on thursday that "we expect our new data center in canelones will make a significant contribution to the professional and technological development of uruguay and the entire region."

google also wrote that in uruguay it is working with local universities, such as the technological university of uruguay (utec) and the university of montevideo (um), to incorporate relevant technology content into relevant courses.

“we are working with key partners in the uruguayan ecosystem – the national development agency (ande) and the national research and innovation agency (anii) – to promote business and innovation.”

building a second data center in latin america is just one step in google's expansion. according to reports the day before, google is also considering building a hyperscale data center near ho chi minh city, vietnam, which is expected to be completed in 2027.

in addition, in april this year, google announced an investment of us$3 billion to build a data center park in indiana and expand its data center in virginia; in may, google said it would invest us$2 billion in malaysia to develop its first data center and google cloud region in the country.
