the research team selected cities for the ranking as those with a total gdp of more than 500 billion yuan in the year. in addition to the contributions of labor, land, capital, technology and human capital, the new index indicator system has added "the number of companies with a market value of more than 10 billion yuan", "the level of urban digital development", "the ratio of days with good ambient air quality" and "general public budget expenditure per capita" to reflect the contribution of entrepreneurs and management factors, data factors, urban environmental quality and urban public services; at the same time, "per capita disposable income" replaces "per capita gdp" to more directly reflect the level of urban people's livelihood. chen xian, chief expert of the report research team, professor of antai college of economics and management of shanghai jiao tong university, and researcher of shenzhen industry research institute of shanghai jiao tong university, said that the china big city strong city index aims to focus on the efficiency, strength and potential of the urban economy and the people's livelihood while paying general attention to the total amount of urban economy, and provide a "window" for the political, industrial and academic circles to observe the quality of urban economic development.
according to the report, the top ten cities are shenzhen, shanghai, beijing, hangzhou, guangzhou, nanjing, wuhan, suzhou, ningbo and wuxi. in terms of spatial distribution, the yangtze river delta urban agglomeration has the largest number of strong cities, 19; the shandong peninsula urban agglomeration, the pearl river delta urban agglomeration, and the yangtze river middle reaches urban agglomeration are closely followed, with 6, 5, and 5 strong cities respectively; the lanzhou-xining urban agglomeration, the ningxia yellow river basin, and the tianshan north slope urban agglomeration do not have a single strong city.
the research team pointed out that strong cities occupy an important position in terms of gdp scale and make a major contribution to the national gdp growth. in 2023, the contribution rate of 59 strong cities to the national gdp growth reached 60.48%, of which the contribution rate of the top 5 strong cities in terms of gdp scale was 14.2%, and the contribution rate of the top 40 strong cities reached 51.73%. this means that more than half of the gdp growth is generated in these strong cities. strong cities play the role of a locomotive to drive china's economic development. china's economic development has entered the era of strong cities. judging from the population and employment data, the carrying capacity of strong cities is considerable. in 2023, the proportion of permanent residents in strong cities will reach 39.95% of the national population, which means that nearly 40% of the national population lives, works or studies in these strong cities. the proportion of employed population in all strong cities to the national employed population reached 41.21%, exceeding the proportion of permanent residents, indicating that the labor participation rate of strong cities is higher than the national average.
the gdp ranking of cities is not consistent with the ranking of the strong city index. the research team conducted a comparison and analysis and believed that the "china large and strong city index" reflects the development trend of chinese cities, reflects the spatial characteristics of chinese cities, shows the development quality of chinese cities, and predicts the future pattern of chinese cities. one of the conclusions of the report is: "a big city is not necessarily a strong city. a strong city is the result of the role of human capital, production efficiency, innovation ability and other aspects."
the forum also officially released a new book, "innovation cities: who is leading the era of strong cities?" the book uses technological innovation and industrial innovation as a perspective to present the innovation portraits of 27 cities around the world from all angles. focusing on how chinese cities can achieve high-quality development and gain new growth momentum from innovation, the book focuses on the source of urban innovation and how universities and capital can activate urban innovation.
