it home reported on august 29 that technology media macrumors published a blog post yesterday (august 28), detailing the clean up "background eraser" ai function introduced for the photos app in the ios/ipados 18.1 beta 3 update.

about clean up

it home note: clean up belongs to apple intelligence and is an ai technology for background erasing, similar to google's magic eraser or the generative fill function commonly found in adobe software.

this feature mainly uses ai tools to erase objects in images.

procedure

in the photos app, when users select any picture and click the edit button, they will see a new clean up button with an eraser icon on it. click it and if there is something on the picture that can be deleted, it will be automatically highlighted.

you can tap on the highlighted object to remove it like magic. if nothing is automatically highlighted, don't worry, you can circle or doodle on any object in the photo to use the clean up function on it.

once the user circles the object or person they want removed, the generative ai on the apple device removes the unwanted or distracting object from the photo, making it look as if it never appeared.

the clean up feature works well for automatically highlighted objects. apple has done all the work behind the scenes to find the depth information and calculate the fill that the object should replace. when users select their own objects, it can be more difficult to get a clean look.

cleaning works best when there's a clear, uncluttered background behind the object you're removing, and the smaller the object, the better. it won't work as well if you're removing an entire person from the foreground of an image (like in a group photo) and there's a lot going on in the background.

you can repeat clean up as many times as you like to try and make your photo look better, and to remove small areas, just zoom in and draw a circle.
