apple macos 15.1 allows users to download app store apps to external hard drives

it home reported on august 29 that macos 15 sequoia (currently available to users as a beta) announced by apple at wwdc 2024 relaxed the storage requirements for downloading apps from the mac app store. now, with the release of the latest beta of macos 15.1, users will be able to download apps directly to external drives.


according to 9to5mac, the macos 15.1 developer preview beta 3 released today adds a new switch in the mac app store settings. after enabling this switch,the system will automatically download and install apps larger than 1gb to the external disk selected by the user.


for apps smaller than 1gb, macos will continue to install them on your mac's internal drive.

in addition, it home noted thatmacos sequoia no longer requires the mac app store to have at least twice the available storage space of the apppreviously, if a user wanted to install a 2gb app, their mac had to have at least 4gb of free space to download it.

macos 15 sequoia will be released to the public next month, and macos 15.1 is expected to be released to the public at the end of october this year.
