"wu shixian painted and placed a water tank on the upper floor.

wet the paper until it is damp

then use a pen to paint the clouds and smoke

although it is not bad, it is not accepted by those who know it because it lacks a brush."

——huang binhong

wu shixian (1845-1916) was named qingyun, with the courtesy name shixian. he later used his courtesy name as his name and later became known as the ink-splashing taoist. he was born in shangyuan (now nanjing) and lived in shanghai. he was a modern chinese painter of the shanghai school.

the composition of the work is bright and concise, the brushstrokes are bold and unrestrained, the ink and water are blended, and it is rich and moist, fully demonstrating wu shixian's unique personal painting style.

wu shixian's paintings are traditional and have two main representative styles: one is the misty and rainy towers and terraces, with wind and rain, changing clouds and mist, peaks and valleys, and dripping ink, which depicts objects in a detailed manner;

the other type is fine-brush landscape, mainly depicting autumn scenery, influenced by wang meng, with fine brushwork and round and vigorous outlines, but few of them have been handed down.

his landscape paintings were initially influenced by the four wangs, but were not highly regarded.

after returning from japan, his painting style changed and he devoted himself to the creation of new chinese painting, combining the painting methods of mi fu and gao kegong with western watercolor techniques, forming a new style with vivid ink and changing mist and rain.

because his painting style was in line with the fashion and was quite similar to the lingnan school of painting, he was deeply loved by the people of guangdong. in his later years, he became famous in shanghai for his splash-ink taoist paintings.

the painting style is in line with the fashion and is quite similar to the lingnan school of painting. however, there are also a few paintings with fine brushstrokes and round and vigorous strokes, similar to wang meng's painting method, which is a work of learning from the ancients.

wu shixian's painting style is often to start painting quickly, using a dry brush to outline and texture, with thick and not thin brushstrokes, and then to dampen the paper and render while it is wet, thus achieving an artistic effect of misty, rich and moist.
