IT Home reported on August 28 that technology media TechCrunch reported yesterday (August 27) that Meta decided to shut down the Spark platform on Tuesday, which mainly serves third-party creators and allows them to build various augmented reality (AR) effects.

After Meta officially announced that it would shut down the Spark platform on January 14, 2025, many creators posted in the community, expressing their disappointment with Meta's decision, and some even said that it would cause them to lose their jobs.

The official announcement of IT Home Translation Meta is as follows:

We are deeply grateful to the community of creators, businesses, and other key stakeholders who have been part of the Meta Spark journey.

When we first launched the platform seven years ago, augmented reality experiences were still unfamiliar to most consumers.

Since then, the imagination, innovation, and creativity of our community of AR creators have helped bring AR to hundreds of millions of people on the Meta Platform.

Meta launched its Spark platform in 2017 to create special effects primarily for Facebook and Instagram, and the company expanded the capability in 2021 to create AR effects for video calls on Messenger, Instagram, and (now discontinued) Portal devices.

According to official data released by Meta, more than 600,000 creators from over 190 countries have used its tools to create AR effects.

Meta said the decision to shut down Spark was made "after a thorough evaluation" and that the move would allow Meta to "prioritize products that we believe will best meet the future needs of consumers and enterprises."
