Ocean University of China 2024 undergraduates held opening ceremony and started a new journey in life

A century-old Ocean University, a century-long meeting. On August 26, the opening ceremony and welcome concert for the 2024 undergraduates of Ocean University of China was held at the Comprehensive Gymnasium of the Laoshan Campus. 4,511 freshmen from all corners of the world gathered at the Ocean University campus to start a new journey of life together.
The ceremony was attended by Tian Hui, Party Secretary of the University, Zhang Junfeng, Deputy Party Secretary and President, Zhang Jing, Executive Deputy Party Secretary, Lu Guangzhi, Deputy Party Secretary and Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission, Yang Maochun, and Fan Qiwei and Lin Xusheng, members of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice Presidents. Wang Houjie, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President, presided over the ceremony.
After the national anthem was played, Zhang Junfeng expressed warm welcome and heartfelt congratulations to the freshmen on behalf of the university, and delivered a speech entitled "Inheriting the Hundred Years of Glory and Standing at the Forefront of the Times". He said that the new students have a special era and mission, and how to recognize and respond to changes in the great changes, and how to achieve success and gain something in college are important issues for the freshmen. He hopes that the students can draw wisdom and strength from the profound history and culture of Century Ocean University.
Zhang Junfeng said that we should inherit the red gene of Century Maritime University to meet the needs of the country and be a Chinese Maritime University student who serves the country and the people. I hope that students will strengthen their ideals and beliefs, establish a correct world outlook, outlook on life, and values, look at their majors and studies from a higher dimension, a broader perspective, and a larger pattern, closely combine personal learning with the future and destiny of the country and the needs of social development, and enhance their sense of mission in learning. We should inherit the innovative spirit of Century Maritime University and be a Chinese Maritime University student who is dedicated to learning and innovation. I hope that students will carry out research-based and inquiry-based learning, be good at discovering problems, digging deep, and always maintain a curious vision and desire for knowledge; be good at critical thinking, fearless of authority, and practice real skills for innovation and creation. We should inherit the struggling character of Century Maritime University to strive for the sea and be a Chinese Maritime University student who strives for progress. I hope that students will make good use of the school's comprehensive and specialized integrated curriculum system, conscientiously complete the learning and practice tasks of each link stipulated in the training program, inherit and carry forward the spirit of hard work and self-improvement, be down-to-earth, persevere, practice excellent skills, and constantly surpass themselves.
Teacher representative and Dean of the College of Fisheries Ai Qinghui hopes that students will inherit the spirit of Ocean University, cultivate a sense of patriotism, and bravely shoulder the mission of the times; seek truth from facts, be down-to-earth, and go far; be open-minded, be brave in innovation, and dare to be the first.
Zhang Jiashuo, a student representative and a 2021 undergraduate student of Biotechnology at Hyde College (cooperatively run by China and foreign countries), reviewed her experience of studying at Ocean University. She hopes that her juniors will study hard and build a solid foundation for growth; find their passion and explore infinite possibilities; care about their country and take on the mission of the times, so that their youth can bloom in the struggle.
Freshman representative Guo Jiuchang, a 2024 marine science major from the School of Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences under the university's "Strengthening Basics Plan", shared her thoughts on college life. She believes that college students in the new era must be firm in their ideals and beliefs and set high aspirations; they must strive for excellence, study hard, and enhance their skills; they must dare to practice and integrate knowledge and action.
After the opening ceremony, the school’s national orchestra and symphony orchestra presented a welcome concert for the freshmen with the theme of “New Trends Entering the Sea, Music Moving Splendor”. In the name of music and with singing, they wished the freshmen and the school to start a new chapter together.
