IT Home reported on August 27 that Tesla CEO Elon Musk today demonstrated the company’s new supercomputer “Cortex”, which is expected to become one of the largest supercomputers in the world, but it is not yet fully ready.

Musk has said the project is critical to Tesla, which in recent years has shifted its focus toward artificial intelligence, which requires massive computing power.

IT Home noted that earlier this year, there were reports that Tesla had encountered problems in a new expansion project at the Texas Gigafactory, which was designed to accommodate a new giant supercomputer for training Tesla's AI. At the time, it was reported that Tesla planned to build a 100-megawatt cluster by August to coincide with the debut of its later-delayed robot taxis. Musk canceled Tesla's other projects in order to focus construction resources on the expansion.

Later, Musk revealed that Tesla plans to eventually expand the cluster to more than 500 megawatts, using half Nvidia processors and half its own AI hardware. Tesla plans to use this computing power to train its neural networks for its long-promised self-driving features.

Now it’s the end of August, and Musk has released a video showing the supercomputer cluster (now called “Cortex”), which only shows a small part of the cluster, which is unfinished and not yet operational. People familiar with the matter told Electrek that the cluster is currently using a temporary cooling system and will not be fully operational until the chillers are completed. In addition, Tesla needs more network feeders. Some believe that the cluster will not be ready until October, which is the new release date of Tesla’s robotaxi project.
