Although the Paris Olympic Games have ended, skilled young people are training hard for their "Olympics" - the 47th WorldSkills Competition!
Walking into the Fashion Technology World Skills Training Base at Guangzhou Baiyun Industrial and Commercial Technician College, the tense atmosphere of preparation for the competition hits you. Fashion Technology contestant Zhou Qinfei will represent the Chinese Fashion Technology Project in the "WorldSkills Olympics". In the final sprint stage, Zhou Qinfei is conducting the final sprint intensive training for each module of the competition.
Fashion technology requires more than just design
The ticking of the countdown timer on the wall made beads of sweat appear on Zhou Qinfei's face. Coach Wen Caiyun stood next to Zhou Qinfei, staring at her every move with bated breath, and no details escaped her eyes.
"Skillful hands cut brocade, meticulously sing of spring". The scissors in Zhou Qinfei's hand seem to "swim" on the cloth freely, but in fact the blades are precise; the cut cloth is stretched out and placed under the sewing machine, and after a smooth operation, the smooth hem is completed; Zhou Qinfei quickly walks to the ironing table, and the cloth is ironed very well with the iron rising and falling. All this happens in a matter of seconds.
When it comes to clothing, many people first think of fashion designers, but don’t know much about fashion technicians and pattern makers. In fact, a professional clothing practitioner must be able to design, understand pattern making, and finely produce in order to become a top technical talent in the industry; a good work also requires a comprehensive professional skills to create.
"The WorldSkills Competition is very different from domestic clothing competitions, as it covers assessments of multiple trades in the clothing industry. Therefore, contestants need to compete on both speed and precision," said Wen Caiyun.
The project consists of four assessment modules, which are conducted over four days. Participants are required to complete tasks such as clothing style design, three-dimensional modeling, pattern making and layout, and clothing production in a rigorous, meticulous and beautiful manner within the specified time based on the materials and equipment facilities provided on site and in accordance with the competition requirements.
The cutting error should not exceed 0.1 mm
From 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., 14 hours a day, except for meal time, Zhou Qinfei repeatedly does the same thing: drawing, making patterns, typesetting, cutting, and producing.
These seemingly repetitive and boring trainings are actually necessary processes for masters to compete with each other. In the fashion technology project, there are more than 100 scoring points for just one piece of clothing. When masters compete with each other, it is the difference between the smallest details. The pattern making module requires that the cutting error cannot exceed 0.1 mm. Under the standard that almost exceeds the limit, it is the willpower that is tempered.
"Our opponents are the world's top players. Only by constantly improving our work and even our movements can we stand out." As the gold medalist in fashion technology at the 45th WorldSkills Competition, coach Wen Caiyun is very strict with Zhou Qinfei.
Zhou Qinfei did not complain about Wen Caiyun's "harsh" requirements, but actively tried to do better. For Zhou Qinfei, coach Wen Caiyun is her goal: "I decided to enroll in the school after seeing Wen Caiyun win the championship in the fashion technology event of the WorldSkills Competition. I want to be like her and win glory for the country."
The power of role models is strong. The reporter was inspired by Zhou Qinfei's vigorous and energetic spirit and deeply felt the patriotism of this fashion craftsman.
Trained three top champions in succession
The craftsman's heart is everywhere in the tailor's work. The reporter noticed that since the 44th World Skills Competition, my country has achieved "three consecutive championships" in the fashion technology project of the World Skills Competition. Guangzhou Baiyun Industrial and Commercial Technician College has also successively trained the champion of the 45th World Skills Competition and the gold medalists in the fashion technology project of the first and second national skills competitions. How did it do this?
"The school's fashion technology major is famous for its cutting-edge curriculum and practice-oriented teaching model, which improves students' professional and technical skills by using competitions to replace training and competitions to promote learning." Zhou Qiang, vice president of Guangzhou Baiyun Industrial and Commercial Technician College, introduced that the school incorporates the advanced design concepts, technical standards, and process flows of the Fashion Technology World Competition into daily teaching to enhance students' professional skills and innovation capabilities, and cultivate high-quality clothing design and production talents that meet the needs of the international market.
"Talent development is inseparable from industry. We work with the industry to build an ecological chain of production, education, evaluation and skills to cultivate talents." Zhou Qiang introduced that, relying on the World Skills training base, the school actively carries out school-enterprise cooperation and integration of industry and education to improve the quality of talent training, and jointly builds bases, courses, and teams with the global clothing e-commerce giant SHEIN to provide internships and employment.
At the same time, relying on the China Training Base and Master Wen Caiyun's Studio, the school connects with brand enterprise projects to carry out product research and development and spread the spirit of the World Skills Competition, connecting artisan talents inside and outside the school to promote the development of the regional clothing industry.
