With the growing consumer demand and the continuous improvement of customs clearance convenience, imports have gradually become a "daily" item in citizens' vegetable baskets. Among imported fruits, durian has always been the number one imported fruit in China. According to statistics from the General Administration of Customs, China imported 825,000 tons of fresh durian in 2022 and 1.426 million tons in 2023, a year-on-year increase of more than 70%.
As the world's largest durian consumer, China's durian market has also attracted the attention of many countries. Since Vietnam became the second country after Thailand to be allowed to import fresh durian into China, its durian market share has continued to rise.
In 2022, nearly 95% of the 825,000 tons of fresh durian imported into China came from Thailand. By 2023, Thailand accounted for 65% and Vietnam accounted for 35%. It can be seen that the Chinese market has a huge demand for fresh durian, and the countries where fresh durian is produced and allowed to be sold in China are equivalent to getting a huge order.
This "competition for the Chinese durian market" has also attracted the attention of heads of state. Thai Prime Minister Setthala said that in the Chinese market, the pressure put on Thai durian by Vietnamese durian is the result of market competition, "We should strive to continuously optimize and improve durian varieties, quality testing and monitoring, and logistics and transportation efficiency."
In addition to Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, Malaysia is also an important durian producer. In 2011, only durian pulp and durian paste from Malaysia could be imported into China. In 2018, frozen whole durian from Malaysia was approved for import. This year, China and Malaysia signed an agreement on the export of fresh durian from Malaysia to China, which means that after 13 years of waiting, fresh durian from Malaysia will enter China for the first time and meet domestic consumers.
On July 9 this year, witnessed by the 16th Supreme Head of State of Malaysia and the current Sultan Abdullah of Pahang, JD Supermarket and Tanah Makmur Berhad, a well-known durian supplier in Malaysia, signed an agreement to prepare for the early deployment of high-quality fresh durian in Malaysia. At the same time, JD Supermarket also signed a contract with Honghui Fruits and Vegetables’ own orchard in Malaysia to ensure the earliest arrival of the first batch of fresh Musang King.
On August 25, the first batch of fresh durian from Malaysia arrived in China by plane, and Chinese consumers ate the first batch of fresh Musang King durian from its place of origin, Malaysia. Currently, consumers can go to the JD APP and search for "Musang King First Release" to directly access the pre-sale page of Musang King, so that they can taste the exotic delicacy without leaving home.
