Last week, former US President and Republican presidential candidate Trump said that if he were to win the White House again, he would offer Tesla CEO Musk a cabinet position or government advisory position, and Musk himself readily agreed.

However, in a new interview released on Sunday Eastern Time, Trump changed his tone again. He said that since Musk is already the CEO of multiple companies such as Tesla and SpaceX, he may not have time to serve in the future White House cabinet because he still has to run his own companies.

Musk is out of Trump's cabinet?

Last Monday, Eastern Time, Trump said that if he were to win the White House again, he would offer Tesla CEO Musk a cabinet position or government advisory position.

Musk himself is expected to be supportive of this. When the topic was raised on X, he responded: "I'm willing to serve."

Earlier this month, Musk also told Trump in a conversation: "I think it would be great if there was just a commission on government efficiency. I would be happy to help on such a commission."

But in an interview released Sunday, Trump said he was concerned that Musk might be too busy.

"He'd like to be involved. (But) now you look at it, he runs big businesses and so on, so he can't, really, I don't think he can be in the Cabinet," Trump said."I would absolutely love to have him in Cabinet, but I don't know how he can get in Cabinet with all that he's dealing with."

“He can advise you, as the saying goes, on matters of state and give you some very good ideas,” Trump said, citing artificial intelligence as an example of where Musk could serve as an advisor.

Trump and Musk have a 'good relationship'

Despite ruling out Musk's chances of joining the cabinet, Trump still spoke highly of Musk.

He commented: "Elon and I have a great relationship. He's great. He's a completely unusual character... but he's a very smart guy."

Just two years ago, Trump and Musk had a notably bad relationship, with the two exchanging insults in public forums such as social media and at political rallies. But they became allies in this election as Musk gradually became more supportive of the Republican Party. Last month, Musk publicly supported Trump shortly after Trump's assassination attempt.

In May of this year, Musk helped to form a super PAC supporting Trump. At the same time, Trump "returned" to the X platform controlled by Musk and started speaking again on the X platform. Prior to this, Trump had not made any comments on the X platform for several years, and only posted on the Truth Social platform owned by Trump Media Technology Company.
