Bianniu reported on August 25 that according to foreign news reports,Teslais reinstating its owner referral program in North America and reinstating a larger $1,000 incentive for electric vehicle purchases.

Last April, Tesla ended its referral program, which had been in place on and off for the past decade.

The automaker has significantly reduced incentives to participate over the past few years, making it less important in its marketing efforts.

Tesla on Saturday launched a new referral program through its mobile app, following the company’s decision to end its previous referral program in May. Instead of offering referral points, the new program offers a gift card redeemable for a variety of products, including merchandise, Supercharging, and more.

Under the newly launched system, the first ten users who use someone's referral link will receive a $1,000 discount on a new Tesla, while the referred user can receive a $500 discount on Supercharging, products, goods, service payments or the purchase of a new vehicle.

Those who purchase a recommended vehicle will also have a chance to win an invitation to an upcoming Tesla event.

That last part is new. The points awarded under the latest plan are only valid for a handful of products Tesla offers through its mobile app.

Now, Tesla owners can actually earn points to use toward the purchase of a new car, which could make the program more popular.

This is Tesla taking demand more seriously and going back to the source with the referral program.

Elon Musk has said several times this year that Tesla plans to launch a new referral program, but he has also warned shareholders that implementing such a system is expensive. In April, Musk emphasized that those who have referral points can still use them, but they will have to wait until the new referral program is launched.

Musk said at Tesla's annual shareholder meeting in June: I think we'll probably revisit the recommendation plan next quarter.

Musk noted at the meeting that Tesla's referral program actually increases the price of each car, which may eventually affect the end consumer. He then reiterated plans to launch a new referral program sometime this quarter and said he does support some type of referral arrangement.

“But I think we’ll revisit this next quarter and see if it makes sense,” Musk added. “I think some kind of referral program does make sense.”

The previous referral program used a points system, with referrals receiving 7,500 points for using their link, down from 10,000 points previously. Tesla has also changed its referral benefits from time to time since the program was launched, often adding, removing, or otherwise adjusting benefits as needed.
