Recently, Apple announced that it aims to adjust the iOS and iPadOS operating systems by the end of this year to respond to the needs of EU users. The update will introduce more customization options, allowing users to change default applications such as browsers, and give iPhone and iPad users the right to delete pre-installed system applications. Specifically, in addition to the core system settings and phone applications, pre-installed applications such as Safari browser, App Store, Photo Gallery, Camera, Messages, etc. can be deleted by users.

iPhone users in the EU are already able to set different default apps for their browsers, email clients, app stores, and contactless payment services. Further, Apple will expand this capability to allow users to choose new default apps for phone calls, text messages, password managers, keyboards, call spam filters, navigation tools, and translation services. For example, users can choose WhatsApp as the default text messaging app instead of the original messaging app, or set Waze maps as the default navigation tool instead of Apple Maps.

Apple has not yet detailed how to set the default apps for these new categories, but has promised to provide more information before the release of the relevant features. According to the plan, starting with subsequent updates of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, users will be able to change the default app settings for calls, text messages, password managers, spam call filters, and keyboards, while the default option adjustments for navigation and translation are expected to be implemented in spring 2025.

To make it easier for users to manage these new default app options, Apple will add a new "Default Apps" section in the Settings app to display all customizable default app settings.

In addition, Apple also announced that it will allow EU users to delete core apps including App Store, Messages, Camera, Photos, and Safari, but Settings and Phone apps will remain unchanged. If a user accidentally deletes the App Store, they can reinstall it through the Settings app, while other deleted apps can be restored from the App Store.

It is worth noting that all the above changes are only for iPhone and iPad users in the EU market, and will be implemented with the updates of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Users in other regions such as the United States will not enjoy this service.
